Safer Detention Substance Misuse Awareness Training Course

Substence abuseThe ‘Safer Detention’ Substance Misuse Awareness Training course is designed to provide individuals working in the custodial environment with the knowledge and skills required to identify, interpret and react correctly to the signs and symptoms of substance misuse amongst detainees.

Students completing the one day course will be able to identify illicit substances, recognise the symptoms of substance abuse and refer each individual to the most suitable healthcare professional. Where qualified, students will be able to administer appropriate first aid interventions when required, enabling them to discharge their role in a more effective manner.

The course also examines the student’s legal responsibilities under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, the PACE Codes of Practice and ’Authorised Professional Practice’ issued by the College of Policing.

The learning outcomes are designed to reflect the requirements of all of the above legislation and guidance and can be enhanced to accommodate both organisational and local force policies and procedures.

At the conclusion of the course, delegates are provided with a competency portfolio to take with them into the workplace for completion with an assigned mentor. The competency portfolio will provide evidence of the delegate’s wider ability to perform their duties in line with the course learning outcomes.
